Lunchtime Piano Recital

Brilliant young pianist Mitra Alice Tham will play an inspiring and varied programme including pieces by Bach, Mozart, Prokofiev, Scarlatti, Bartok, Debussy and Beethoven. The recital coincides with the end of the exhibition ‘Eye Music’, paintings by Stephen Webster and the last show upstairs at the George.

Mitra has been a prizewinner at many international competitions. She is a diverse musician. A skilled composer and arranger whose recent commissions have included a transcription of ‘The Entertainer’ and other famous works for piano quintet and choir and other various ensembles.                                             www.mitraalicetham.com

Composer pianist Lola Perrin returns to Coleford Festival of Words with a programme of her original compositions to complement Joan Gabie’s exhibition in the gallery. The centre piece of the concert is Startpiece: a collaboration for piano and pre-recorded spoken word with composer Alexis Kirke,  featuring the voices of John Humphrys in conversation with Princeton geologist Adam Maloof about his remarkable fossil find from snowball earth and what this means for our origins.

Drawing as Performance

David Behar-Perahia will give an illustrated talk about his work on Tueday 26th April 2011  7pm at the gallery. This event complements the exhibition Drawing as Performance which continues to 30th April.  

Off the Wall

Affordable Art Bazaar Call to Artists from the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley to submit wall-mounted artworks for an exhibition in the gallery,upstairs at the GEORGE, from 3rd December to 22nd January.  The art will be sold ‘Off the Wall’ during the exhibition and replaced from the reserve. Bring up to 3 works to the gallery on Saturday 20th November, 10am-5pm. Any medium, any size, framed (if appropriate) and ready to hang, priced no higher than £250.  A label must be fixed to each work with name, address, email and telephone number, title and price.  Works will be selected and hung by the upstairs team.  Entrance free, 30% commission on sales. Martyn Grimmer will give a talk on his work and collaborations with other artists on Friday 29th October at 8pm

Friday 3rd September 2010  Walk from Newnham to coincide with the start and finish of the Walking the Land ‘River Art Walk’ on the opposite bank. Meet at the bottom of Severn Street 1.15 pm. A steep climb affording views of the Horseshoe, dropping to Bullo Pill, then along the Severn bank to Newnham, arriving to greet walkers on the other side. No dogs, please.

Friday 10th September 2010  7pm  Andrew Darke will talk on ‘Wildness and the Severn Bore’ and at 7.50pm Ian Beetlestone will play jazz on the George’s grand piano. The Severn Bore is expected at 9.19pm at Newnham. Entrance free, donations welcome.

11th/12th September The artists will have a presence at the Magnificent Severn Festival, a celebration of the river at various venues.

Friday 24th September 8pm We are very fortunate to be hosting a reading by Philip Gross from The Water Table, winner of the TS Eliot Poetry Prize 2009. Entrance free, donations to the Pakistan Flood Disaster Relief Fund. (£80 was raised by an audience of 15 people and the cheque sent to DEC)

Friday 1st October 8pm  Stuart Ballard, surfer and Magnificent Severn Festival organizer, chats about ‘The River that flows Backwards’. Entrance free, donations welcome.

PETER REDDICK   CUTTING THE LIGHT

23rd July 2010  Screening of Peter Reddick’s photographic sequence ‘A Dissolving World’   (35 mins)

Sadly, Peter passed away on 28th September 2010. The upstairs team are very grateful to have been able to exhibit the work of such a fine artist, printmaker and illustrator. He will be sorely missed.
